About Me:
*** Good people, I'll be closing my account in a few days ***
*** Be certain that I'm not feeling offended by any of you ***
*** I just don't feel the need for this any more ***
*** I'll try to write personal good-bye letters before I go ***
First and foremost, WYSIWYG.
As for my personal details, I've been a freelance technical translator of English-Portuguese, working mostly from home for the last 20 years or so; my line of work leaves me with a lot of free time, but to be honest I don't know what to do with it some times...
By design perhaps, or more likely by professional deformation, I have an analytical mind, and sometimes it's hard to find the "Off" switch.
I live in a small rural town, not far from the capital city. I am not married or otherwise engaged, and have no children. I don't like going to pubs or discos, which makes it hard for me to make new acquaintances outside my professional network.
My position in matters of loving relationships is perhaps an old-fashioned one: although nobody can tell beforehand how long "it" will last between two people, "it" should be entered with a spirit of it's-gonna-be-forever; also, one-on-one, one-at-a-time, and together-every-single-day is the version of "it" which gives me the most serenity
The reason I mention this is that I think a person's approach to romantic relationships in general (and to sexuality in particular) is a fundamental trait of personality.

Requests:
In short, admirable people.
But since I already know how men think (after all, I am one...), I'd rather correspond with women, because that would allow me to understand them better.
As such, I guess you can say I'm looking for admirable women -- who not only enjoy thinking (and are actually good at it), but also are humble enough to enter a fair exchange of ideas about the "whys", the "hows", and the "what fors" of life in general.
All this put together usually means "30 or older" so, please, no teenagers.

Language Exchange Requests:
Jag kan hjälpa dig med din Engelska, om du kan hjälpa mig med min Svenska ;)
Interests, Hobbies, etc.:
I have recently found that I absolutely love freezing weather and snowy landscapes, so my next unreasonable objective is to try spending a whole winter in a log cabin.
As for everyday activities, I don't believe in competition sports or gymnasiums, but I do try to walk 1 hour every day (well... 5 out of 7 days is more statistically accurate) -- this will definitely not make me slim, but should be enough to keep the minimum levels of fitness for the heart & lungs.
I have some gardening skills and am very much interested in World War II, so I guess it was the combination of those two that provided the inspiration for my alias.
I do like off-roading and jeeps of all sorts, in particular those models used by the military, throughout the world and throughout time (I would collect them, if I had the money for it...).
I have thousands of books, movies, and music albums, which I think is a clear indicator that I spend much too much of my free time indoors, but I definitely would like to undertake more outdoors activities, preferably several days at a time (like camping, or even just traveling and sightseeing), if only I could find good company.
I'd also like to exchange cooking recipes of typical dishes from different countries -- anyone interested?

Favorite Music:
I listen to all sorts of music, really, but mostly while I work; and since the right-side hemisphere of my brain is already busy with words, I tend to favor instrumental "modern" music, like Vangelis, Mike Oldfield, or Anthony Philips; for that effect, soundtracks can be quite good too, such as a few I know by James Horner, Michael Kamen, or Bear McReary.
On the other hand, I do enjoy being lulled by well-mastered female voices, such as Eva Cassidy's or Alison Kraus'.
Still, it all depends on my mood, because sometimes nothing "tastes" better than Jim Steinman's hammered rock.
Ah, how could I have forgotten about Tom Waits?...
But perhaps equally important are my dislikes: Rolling Stones, Reggae, Rap (to be continued...)

Favorite Movies:
From the top of my head, "The Fifth Element", "Glory", "Cyrano de Bergerac" (French version of 1990), "Spanglish", "Serenity" (of course!), "Crouching Tiger, Flying Dragon", "What Dreams May Come", "The Life of Brian", "Allways", "The Adventures of Baron Munchausen", "Platoon", "North by Northwest", "The Last of the Mohicans", "Mulholland Drive", "Mars Attacks!", "Fargo", "Labyrinth", "Streets of Fire", "Rambo I", "Red Dawn", "Wings of Desire", "Magnolia", "American Beauty", "Saving Private Ryan", "Gone With the Wind", "An Affair to Remember", "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" (1941), "The Trouble With Harry", "Dead Poets Society", "Beauty and the Beast" (Disney), "The Skeleton Key", "King Fisher", "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas", "Animal House", "Delicatessen", "Brazil", "As Good As It Gets", "Artificial Intelligence", "Empire of the Sun", "Nurse Betty", "Tales of the Four Seasons", "Ravenous" and, basically, anything by Alfred Hitchcock or Terry Gilliam.
I'll quite probably add to this list later on.

Favorite TV Shows:
Also from the top of my head, I remember sitting down anxiously to watch "Futurama", "Firefly", "Brothers in Arms", "Black Adder", "The Red Dwarf", "Space 1999", "Bonanza", "Riget", "'Allo 'Allo!", "Men in Trees", "King of the Hill", "The Simpsons", "The World at War" (BBC), "ER" (early seasons), "Two and a Half Men", "The Sopranos", "Gilmore Girls", "My Name Is Earl"; and I enjoy documentaries in general, as long as they don't have background music...
Oh well, another list to be improved with time, I guess.
And although this probably won't mean anything to most of you reading this, I think RTP2 is the only Portuguese TV channel (at times) worth watching.

Favorite Books:
It's easier if I just say outright that my favorite subject is Science Fiction, and that my favorite author is Heinlein. And be fairly warned that two of my other favorite writers/thinkers are Aristotle and Nietzsche.
As for more than this, I have read thousands of books throughout my life, and some of them are like old sweaters which I used to love years ago, but that now lie dorment in the back of the closet, and therefore slip my mind entirely until the next time I see them.
Hmm... Suddenly, it struk me: the irony in my liking St- Exupéry's "Little Prince" as much as I do Machiavelli's "The Prince".
Ah, and of course, european-style comics, like Hugo Pratt's "Corto Maltese" series, or Moebius+Jodorowsky's "The Incal" series.

Favorite Quotes:
"women and children first"
(don't know who said that the first time, but it is probably someone I would have liked to meet)
"in life, everything comes with a price"
(I said that)
"just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they aren't after you"
(I'll bet lots of smart people said that, in one form or another)
