Oh golly, I knew Japanese before I went. I even taught Japanese in London some years prior. It was more that you don't learn things like "Aaaiii! The laser powered weevil is attacking Osaka!!" in standard Japanese textbooks.
There is actuall a book which teaches Japanese through manga.
With any luck you'll soon be composing polite form haiku in medieval kanji, in the little spoken Kyoto dialect.

You may know of the James Heisig books on remembering the kanji. They're called "Remembering the Kanji" oddly enough. He learned all the thousands of characters in a few months, quite insane. The system works most definitely. Look them up if you want to live.
When I lived in Japan I was so thrilled that anime was on every day, but none of it was subbed or dubbed even (I concur wholeheartedly about English anime) so it was like some cruel trick that they had played on me.
I took it very personally of course. ;)
