Well you hit the nail on the head, especially when they decided to travel to France but they realise that reality has came back towards them. I'll admit it's still a tragic book, despite all the sexual behaviour by the characters present in it...
At some point it does get romantic, but of course, a few isolated sections doesn't matter compared to the rest of the novel.
A happy ending is just a cliche.
He is, having a affair with a colleague then moving to Paris is extremely romantic, just the essence of romanticism.
"romantic" To which we return back to the original statement, W. B. Yeats is greater than Richard Yates.
1984 allows the reader to quickly understand the situation, likewise Brave New World. I enjoyed his work Homage to Catalonia since it's an actual event as opposed to a work of fiction. Unless you believe 1984 is what we are living in now...
Of Orwell, what would you have in mind?
I understand the question, though an ending such as that, I could imagine an individual being depressed. Doesn't matter though, nobody can beat every English students most loved author... Steinbeck.
