About Me:

There’s no absolute description of myself because everybody has their own opinions. But, okay, I’ll describe myself based on what I believe I am.
I'm Andy, 18 years old and a university student. Child of the eastern seas, from the island of the howling winds. Slave of social construction, conformity, neocolonialism, and realism and currently in the process of emancipating myself from all of that, even though I think it’s close to impossible. A FILIPINO (loud and proud) – the progeny of the marriage of Eastern and Western cultures. I am a cultural relativist but never forgetting that I’m also a human who have my own judgments.
I like to ponder on shallow and stupid things. Frustrated (and frustrating) writer…And now, I should try to practice my writing skills and try to galvanize my digital words into life because I have to – academically speaking (or else, I'll fail my subjects and be drowning myself in self-pity for the rest of the semesters left...hehehe...)
I believe I’m unique – just like everyone else. Hehehe… (We all think we’re unique and that makes us all the same. Hahahaha...) Nothing special. Nothing interesting about me but I’m interested in many things. Can’t describe myself more because I don’t know what else to write. :-)

Requests:

ANY people of different race and ethnicities, age, and gender.
Those who are willing to share their ideas, culture, experiences, and wit.
Those who are willing to trade interesting long letters are most welcome. But wall post and short messages are also okay. :-) I hope people who have something to say about what they think and what they do.

Language Exchange Requests:

Can help with English and Tagalog.
I want to learn languages...but so far, I can speak a little French, a little German, a little Italian, and a little Spanish...the others are just super basic greetings. Maybe some conversation partners to help me improve?

Interests, Hobbies, etc.:

Hobbies: reading, watching movies, listening to music, surfing the net, writing, drawing, traveling, imagining (the poor substitute to experience if you can’t afford to experience it :-) but more powerful because anything can happen. And makes you forget the whirlwind outside, even for a moment.), drowning myself in my imagined world, sleeping (and, yes, dream of home – miles away), walk outside, observe people, collect tangible things valuable for me (from shampoo bottles to a pebble I stumbled upon on the street – it’s history. It’s a priceless junk in time – well, at least, for me. Hehehehe…), collecting instant coffee sachets, gazing on awfully nice, splendid, or just plain distracting sights in the hopes of inhaling or ingesting it somehow :D (like food in a magazine if I’m too broke to eat and breathtaking views, architecture, etc. if I  feel like I’m surrounded by negative things), fanning myself in this furnace (hehehe…), talking to myself and my imaginary friends in our creepy dormitory room, and… did I mentioned reading?

Interests: books, art, literature, architecture, theatre, music, movies, television, cinema, magazines, newspapers, anything to read, [idiosyncrasies of] society and culture, race and ethnic relations, migration, languages, world history (especially from the point of view of the ‘minor’ players), pre-colonial Philippines, Philippine history, modern history (hahahahaha…), social psychology, anthropology, Third World feminism, sunrise and sunsets, Mandalas, [Aztec, Mayan, Olmec, Inca and native American tribal groups] art and culture, Islamic art and culture, photographs, sepia and/or black-and-white photographs, the sound of silence, Manila cacophony, Chinese music and culture, graffiti, urban culture, intricate designs and patterns(any designs: decorative design, human designs, structural designs, cultural designs), all shades of brown, coffee or tea, the ocean and the sea, rainforest, mountains, comic books, the dynamics that is happening in social networking sites like this (isn’t that interesting?), horizons (but too bad I can't reach them...hehehehe)…

Favorite Music:

hip-hop, rnb, pop, alternative, rock, Philippine indigenous music, Original Pilipino Music, classical[Western and Eastern alike], world music...any genre, actually. Anything that is not noise to my ears. I like listening to music of foreign languages. I'm learning language through it. So if you have something to suggest, please leave it to my wall post. :-)

Favorite Movies:

The Kite Runner, Fiddler on the Roof, Schindler's List, The Pianist, Life is Beautiful, Moulin Rouge, Chicago, Borat, Hotel Rwanda, Titanic, Apocalypto (except that…), La Vie En Rose, Walk the Line, Fahrenheit 9/11, Fame, Dirty Dancing 2, The Devil Wears Prada, Chocolat, Grave of the Fireflies, The God's Must be Crazy, Mona Lisa Smile, Dead Poets Society, Bayaning Third World, Ganito kami Noon, Paano Kayo Ngayon? (Oo nga. Paano na kami ngayon?)...any movie - historical, comedy, cartoons and animated films, documentary, musical...

Favorite TV Shows:

In DVD: Prison Break, Lost, Heroes, CSI:NY, [any] news program (TV Patrol World), Mr. Bean (hehehe...intelligently stupid), Project Runway, Will and Grace, Discovery Channel, BBC, National Geographic documentaries. I-Witness documentaries... <<I watch everything in DVDs. Except for the news program….>>

Favorite Books:

Can't name them all. They are too many. I love them even if almost all are second-hand.
Genres ranging from classical to contemporary, fiction to non-fiction. I especially like historical fictions, those that can lead me to the door to the past (and also to the future), those that show the evolution of a society or an individual, and those that present an array of truths (to be processed cognitively in my judgment and meaning machine). I also like to read history books, political and social commentaries, and anthologies of essays, biographies/autobiographies, short stories, and works of a person (like Jose Rizal).

Favorite Quotes:

"We don't see things as they are; we see things a we are." - The Talmud
“…the secret of the greatest fruitfulness¬ and the greatest enjoyment of existence is to live dangerously.¬” --Friedrich Nietzsche
“A great many open minds should be closed for repairs.” --Toledo Blade Newspaper
“Ang buhay ay parang gulong. Kung minsan nasa ilalim, kung minsan nasa ilalim na naman. At kung kailan ka nasa ilalim, saka naman titirik.” Hay, buhay.
“A real book is not one that we read, but one that reads us.” -- W. H. Auden
“Adventure is not outside a man; it is within.”  -- David Grayson
“It’s just a matter of perspective.¬ Some complain because roses have thorns but others rejoice because thorns have roses.”
“The truth that sets you free is the same truth that will imprison you.”
“Wisdom has two parts: 1. Having a lot to say, and 2. Not saying it.”
“I'd rather be hated for who I am than to be loved for something I'm not.” …
“It is not enough to accept me for who I am. You have to accept me for who I’m not.”
“Things are not what it seems to be.”
“Everyone thinks of changing the world, but no one thinks of changing himself.” -- Leo Tolstoy
“To understand the heart and mind of a person, look not at what he has already achieved, but at what he aspires to.” -- Kahlil Gibran
“Know thyself? If I knew myself, I'd run away.”  -- Johann Wolfgang von Goethe [but knowing yourself means facing your fears, right? or left? – ayoko na nga, korni na.]
“Ten virtues of a new world: tolerance, open-mindedness, solidarity, gentleness, solitude, prudence, humor, irony, pragmatism, and hope.” – according to Prof. Randy David [saludo. Hats off.]
“I have learned silence from the talkative, toleration from the intolerant, and kindness from the unkind; yet, strange, I am ungrateful to those teachers.” -- Kahlil Gibran
“Life is like a stone. It’s hard. And cold.” Hahahaha…

-- excerpt of Jose Rizal's Mi Ultimo Adios
