Greg,
Either Vladimir Lossky or George Meyendorf, Orthodox scholars, once called Eckhart the most Eastern among the Western Christian thinkers; he has an incredible emphasis on deification/theosis. He's continuing the project of Athanasius who said, "God became man that man might become God."
You mention his Aristotelianism...iirc, I think he explains deification or mystical union as happening in the active intellect where the Holy Spirit dwells and transforms it.
You're definitely right about his Neo-Platonic heritage and spirituality! It would make sense if he got that through Pseudo-Dionysius, right? I'm not sure if he knew any of the Eastern Church Fathers directly; few Medievals had any knowledge of Greek. The theme of exitus and reditus (exit and return) is very Neoplatonic. Do you know if he believed in apokatastasis (the restoration or redemption of every being to God.) The Neaplatonics and maybe some Stoics held it as did (I think) Origen and Maximus the Confessor. I have to get going now, but let's continue this conversation!

Okay,
My turn for a question, but mine is a stupid one. What exactly is "Australian Rules Football"?

Hi Greg,
Sorry to take so long on getting back to you. I've been away from Interpals for a long time. I've read a number of articles by McGinn on Eckhart. I was supposed to write a paper for a class comparing his notion of the godhead beyond god (I think that's what its called) with a similar concept found in the writings of Nishida Kitaro, a twentieth century Japanese Buddhist monk of the Kyoto school. It's a little similar to Nirguna Brahman in Advaita Vedanta.
Eckhart strikes me as being very eastern Christian (and neo-platonist) in his theology. Despite his seeming "unorthodoxy", I think his foundational assumptions are irrevocably Christian (for example the necessity of grace, the incarnation, etc.)
What's your take on McGinn? It's been a while since I've read his articles, but (iirc) he seems to think that Eckhart is not as "unorthodox" as some of his more conservative critics think.
Thanks for the comment, BTW.

thanks for your visit:)
um.. thank you for saying that....
I've been a little confused these days,, because I think I was not that interested in law as much as before. Also it takes so long time to be a actual lawyer.. I know that law can give me a very good carrer and big fortune.. but isn't it so meaningless if I'm not into that job?
Well.. yeah,, I better look up for something more..^^
