About Me:
I'm a 31 year old male and I live in Dublin, Ireland. I'm a bit shy and introverted sometimes. I'm not a very religious person but have often considered myself an Atheist, a Buddhist, and a Christian (ABC) all rolled into one great big ball, if such a thing is possible. I'm not actively involved in politics although I'm firmly on the left of the political spectrum. I don't know much about astrological starsigns and I don't have much interest in it but it's ok if you do, I am a Scorpio if you must know. I'm a mophead, that is to say I have full and thick, wavy black hair on my head, my boss recently told me that I was beginning to look "grungey", I have been growing my hair since the spring of 2007 and it's starting to develop a few ringlets so I'm going to have to tie my hair back soon. I look like a hippy. I have been told that I look a bit like Colin Day-Morrison. Who's he you may ask, well here's an equation that anyone can solve, Colin Farrell + Daniel Day Lewis + Jim Morrison = Johnny Fox. Those who have seen a resemblence have since gone to Specsavers. My ideal jobs are radio DJ and just play music all day, or maybe a cinema projectionist and just watch films all day. I'd like to be a contributor to the Lonely Planet travel guides, I'd really love to travel but I have a fear of flying however I still hope to take a year off and travel around the world, my Top 10 destinations are Argentina, Brazil, US, Canada, Spain, France, Germany, Japan, New Zealand, and home sweet home, Ireland. I'm terrified of spiders and I dislike creepy crawlies so I'm not very keen on gardening. I'm a charitable kind of person and am quite happy to support various charities including Amnesty, Barnardos, Irish Cancer Society, Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind, Oxfam, and the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI). My favourite colour is azure and my favourite sound is the sound of rain falling on an umbrella. The people I admire the most are my dear Mum (I love you) and the Irish revolutionary figure James Connolly.
Requests:
I would like to meet anyone from anywhere, age and gender is not important. I'm not looking for romance although if romance does result from our correspondence then it is purely incidental. Feel free to ask me any questions you like. If you don't ask questions then you will not get any answers, it's as simple as that. I WILL NOT RESPOND TO PROFILES WHICH ARE EMPTY, you could at least make some effort to include some information about yourself, why respond to someone you know nothing about? If you need help just use the 'stream of consciousness' approach and just type up whatever comes into your head, just like what I have done right there, just a second ago. Your profile can then be edited and refined at a later date. You don't need to have a picture but it helps as a picture does paint a thousand words. If you can type up a thousand words then do so. I will do my best to respond to messages as quickly as I can. I will consider snail mail, however I much prefer email. As a compromise I will be happy to write to those who I am familiar with but only if you are happy to respond to me electronically instead of with handwritten letters until I am comfortable enough to give you my home address. I would appreciate it if you introduced yourself on the wall first but if you have concerns about your privacy then that's ok, you can message me privately. Generally I respond to public wall messages quicker than private ones, so if there is something you wish to know urgently then you can just post a small message or question on the wall, longer private messages naturally will take me longer to type up a response.
Interests, Hobbies, etc.:
My main interests are film and music, other hobbies include art, cycling, film, hiking, hillwalking, jogging, philosophy, photography. I use a Nikon D70s, which is a handy beginner's digital SLR camera. I hope to upgrade to a Nikon D300 early next year. I listen to an iPod Nano, which although is very pretty, the battery itself is a piece of crap. I might consider doing a film course as I believe it to be a very powerful medium. I like to drink occassionally but I wouldn't call it a hobby, it's more a way of life really, it's like eating and sleeping. I have reduced the amount of alcohol I consume now, I might have a few drinks maybe once or twice a month. I play a few computer games the odd time, but I primarily use my Playstation 2 to watch DVDs. I love the Grand Theft Auto series and I'm a devotee of Pro Evolution Soccer and have been for a number of years. I don't like cooking so I like to eat out sometimes, two or three times a week if possible. I'm not a football fanatic but I had supported Liverpool in the English Premiership since I was young. I also support FC Barcelona in the Spanish League. I absolutely hate Manchester United PLC, and no, it's not because they are European Champions, I've always hated them. Actually, maybe I am a football fanatic. I love animals especially dogs, foxes and badgers. I'm not an avid gardener, so my back yard is slightly overgrown but it does provide great cover for a fox and badger habitat. However I do love a nice well manicured lawn so I make sure the grass is kept nice and short with a manual push cylinder lawnmower in a desperate attempt to reduce my carbon footprint, which at the time of writing is about the same size as King Kong's. I have a nitro powered r/c car but I never really use it, not even sure why I bought it, sure they look great when they are running but they're a bitch to maintain and I'm just too lazy to fix it. I'm a big fan of stand up comedy as well, I love Bill Bailey, Des Bishop, Jimmy Carr, Billy Connolly, Jack Dee, Eddie Izzard, Jerry Seinfeld, Steven Wright and a few others.
Favorite Music:
I like all sorts of music, very eclectic taste ranging from bluegrass, blues, classical, electronic, folk, hip-hop, jazz, pop, reggae, rock, soul, world. Favourite artists include Air, Tori Amos, The Beatles, Beastie Boys, Beck, Bjork, Bloc Party, Blur, David Bowie, Buena Vista Social Club, Johnny Cash, The Clash, Leonard Cohen, Ry Cooder, CSS, Miles Davis, De la Soul, The Doors, Bob Dylan, Steve Earle, Flaming Lips, Aretha Franklin, Michael Franti & Spearhead, Funkadelic, Gangstarr, Gorillaz, Woody Guthrie, Joy Division, Kraftwerk, Los de Abajo, Ewan MacColl, Magnetic Fields, Bob Marley, Massive Attack, Metallica, Ennio Morricone, Muddy Waters, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Patti Smith, The Pogues, Portishead, The Prodigy, Public Enemy, Pulp, Radiohead, Rage Against the Machine, Otis Redding, Josh Ritter, Regina Spektor, REM, Rolling Stones, Paul Simon, Nina Simone, Bruce Springsteen, Sly & The Family Stone, Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros, Tinariwen, Toots and the Maytals, Gillian Welch, Tom Waits, A Tribe Called Quest, Wu-Tang Clan, oh and the O Brother Where Art Thou and Juno soundtracks are pretty cool too. My favourite Irish artists are Bell X 1, The Frames, David Kitt, Sinead O'Connor, Declan O'Rourke, Damien Rice. I don't like U2, they are way too overated. I always look for second hand records before checking the newer ones as I love a good bargain. The most recent CDs I bought were from Elbow and Metallica, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds and The Go Team. I also bought some world music CDs for my niece but I think they might be too good for her so I might decide to keep them for myself. I don't like bling culture or Pop Idol contestants. I can't play any instruments except for the tambourine and claves, and I have a set of drum sticks which I had stolen off a friend of mine when I had borrowed his drum kit and I am quite happy to bang them on the car steering wheel whenever I'm stuck in traffic. I'd love to be able to play the piano and I have considered getting one. If you're lucky you can find free pianos on Freecycle websites but I would have to pick it up myself, and it would be very difficult to fit a piano into the back of a Mini. Another instrument which I'm seriously considering to play is a drum kit. Unfortunately they make so much noise and the neighbours will go insane but I have recently discovered these V-Drums from Roland which sound a lot like acoustic drums but they allow me to plug my headphones into it making them virtually silent. I had the pleasure of playing one at an exhibition a few weeks ago.
Favorite Movies:
I like all sorts of films but in the past year or two I have developed an interest in foreign cinema which allows me to travel without having to leave my living room. I like all sorts of movies, action, comedy, documentaries, drama, foreign, independent, martial arts, science fiction, I generally dislike big budget summer blockbuster franchises and sequels as I view them as just brainless eye candy, where box office receipts are considered more important than an actual storyline. There are exceptions however. FAVOURITE FILMS include 2001: A Space Odyssey, Airplane, Alien, Amelie, Amores Perros, Apocalypse Now, Assassination of Jesse James by The Coward Robert Ford, Badlands, Bande a Parte, Belleville Rendez-vous (Les Triplettes de Belleville), The Big Lebowski, Blazing Saddles, Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Crash (Paul Haggis version, not David Cronenberg's one although I respect him as a director, I loved The Fly, A History of Violence, and Eastern Promises, although that was probably due to Viggo Mortensen's performance), Devil's Backbone (El espinazo del diablo), Die Hard, District 13, Diving Bell and the Butterfly, Donnie Darko, Dr Strangelove, The Edukators, Edward Scissorhands, The Elephant Man, Full Metal Jacket, Ghost Dog, Gojira (Godzilla), Goodbye Lenin, Goodfellas, Good the Bad and the Ugly, Grave of the Fireflies, Groundhog Day, Halloween, Hana Bi, House of Flying Daggers, Ikiru, Infernal Affairs, Inside Man, Into the Wild, Jaws, The Bicycle Thieves (Ladri di Biciclette), La Haine, Lars and The Real Girl, Little Miss Sunshine, Lord of the Rings, Nobody Knows, Not One Less, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Pan's Labyrinth (El laberinto del fauno), Paris Texas, Planet of the Apes (original 1968 version), Pleasantville, Porco Rosso, Predator, The Prestige, Princess Bride, Prodigal Son, Rashomon, Seven Samurai, Seventh Seal, Shawshank Redemption, Schindler's List, Shrek, Spirited Away, Star Wars, Superman, Oldboy, Taxi Driver, The Terminator, There Will Be Blood, Thin Red Line, The Killer, Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada, Throne of Blood, Tokyo Godfathers, Toy Story (I am a huge Disney-Pixar fan), The Truman Show, When We Were Kings plus many many more I haven't got time to list. Actually NO, that's probably about all of them. My FAVOURITE ACTORS include Kevin Bacon, Marlon Brando, Gael Garcia Bernal, Jack Black, Steve Buscemi, George Clooney, Matt Damon, Johnny Depp, Daniel Day-Lewis, Clint Eastwood, Jake Gylenhaal, Tony Leung, Joseph Gordon-Levitt (that's right, the kid from Third Rock from the Sun, you must see him in Mysterious Skin or Brick), William H Macy, Bill Murray, Paul Newman, Christopher Reeve (he really could fly), Al Pacino, Sean Penn, Brad Pitt, Takashi Shimura, Will Smith, Beat Takeshi, Billy Bob Thornton, Tom Cruise and Mel Gibson (although personally I hate both of their attitudes). FAVOURITE ACTRESSES include Jodie Foster, Angelina Jolie, Julianne Moore, Cate Blanchett, Kirsten Dunst, Maggie Gylenhaal, Scarlett Johansson. My FAVOURITE DIRECTORS are Ingmar Bergman, Nick Broomfield, The Coen Brothers, Tim Burton, Jean Luc Godard, Michel Gondry, Jim Jarmusch, Spike Jonze, Takeshi Kitano, Stanley Kubrick, Akira Kurosawa, Sergio Leone, Terrence Malick, Hayao Miyazaki, Yasujiro Ozu, Martin Scorsese, Ridley Scott, Steven Spielberg, Guillermo del Toro, Wong Kar Wai, Zhang Yimou. I respect Quentin Tarantino for introducing me to a whole world of cinema but I wouldn't have too much admiration for much of his work, 'plagiarism' comes to mind then I think of Mr Tarantino.
Favorite TV Shows:
I must admit that I don't watch television that much anymore, on average I watch about 4 hours each week and that would include a movie about 2-3 hours long or a football game lasting 90 minutes so there are days when I just will not watch anything, I much prefer DVDs to television. However I love Curb Your Enthusiasm, Ali G, The Day Today and Brass Eye (Chris Morris), The Simpsons, The Office, Have I Got News for You, Louis Theroux, My Name is Earl, Star Trek (Original), Oz, The Sopranos, Six Feet Under, Entourage, Futurama, Only Fools & Horses, Father Ted, Dragon's Den, Mythbusters, Discovery Channel, Fonejacker, Extreme Dreams with Ben Fogle, current affairs and documentaries especially David Attenborough BBC wildlife documentaries like The Blue Planet and Planet Earth. I have an aversion to reality and talent shows such as Big Brother and Pop Idol, I hate MTV and I find celebrity and bling culture absolutely distasteful.
Favorite Books:
Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, Banksy: Wall and Piece, Catcher in the Rye, Concise Oxford English Dictionary (9th Edition)Gary Larson's Complete Farside, Grapes of Wrath, Gulliver's Travels, Macbeth, On the Road (Jack Kerouac), Terry Pratchett's Discworld (I even had the pleasure of meeting him and had him sign a copy of The Last Continent for me), Princess Bride, The Road (Cormac McCarthy), Ukiyo-e Art (Phaidon Press). The most recent book I read was The Lovely Bones but I just wanted to read it before the film comes out.
Favorite Quotes:
"A banker is a fellow who lends you his umbrella when the sun is shining, but wants it back the minute it begins to rain."
"Music is a moral law. It gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, a charm to sadness, and life to everything. It is the essence of order, and leads to all that is good, just and beautiful, of which it is the invisible, but nevertheless dazzling, passionate, and eternal form"
