Charcoal is indeed fun to work with, I still haven't used any chalk pastels yet since my art class focuses primarily on monochrome. http://vserver1.cscs.lsa.umich.edu/~crshalizi/T4PM/futurist-manifesto.html You might like that article if you haven't already read it, the author uses some pretty vivid imagery.

Yeah, ballpoint also requires almost no preparation, so it's pretty easy to pick up for me. The only issue is controlling how much pressure you apply on the paper. What medium do you prefer to go with?
