About Me:

I am a 26 year old girl from Norway who has recently moved to the Netherlands. I'm currently having a holiday after completing my masters degree in comparative literature before I left Norway, and I'm starting to look for a job here in Amsterdam. The reason I made this move is because I fell in love with a Dutch man, whom I am now living with. I'm happy with my life and with my decision to move, although of course it's always a little scary to move to a new country.

I've recently started writing a blog (which you can find the URL for under 'website') about my experiences with moving to Amsterdam and living here, basically day to day stuff. You may also find some useful tips here if you plan to visit Amsterdam yourself, so feel free to check that out. I'll try to keep it up to date. :)

I've not been on the site much recently, but I've met some really nice people here earlier, and I have no doubt there are more of them, so I'll try to check in somewhat regularly.

FYI: The picture in my profile is supposed to be funny. It's taken in a souvenir shop in Amsterdam, and I put the hat on because it was so tacky that I just had to. So any compliments about how hot I look in this hat (yes, strangely, there have been several...) are more likely to make me laugh than anything else. And, if bombarding me with compliments is designed as a circuitous way to get into my pants - I have a boyfriend (and even if I didn't this would not be the way to go about it) - it's not gonna happen. That being said, feel free to compliment me if you're being sincere and have reason to... ;)

Requests:

I'm interested in communicating with anyone who can write in a language I understand (English/Norwegian/Swedish), and preferably have some similar interests (but lets also celebrate our differences!). Since I don't really know many people here in the Netherlands yet, I'm also particularly interested in communicating with any 'locals'.

Interests, Hobbies, etc.:

I enjoy literature, writing, drama, travelling, film and television, cooking, languages, philosophy and probably a great deal more.

Favorite Music:

Garbage, Turbonegro, Nelly Furtado, The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Beethoven, Katie Melua, Kent, Leonard Cohen, Joni Mitchell, The White Stripes +++

Favorite Movies:

Again, too many to mention, but I can copy and paste from facebook. :)

First place: Boondock Saints. Others: The Matrix, Fight Club, Love Actually, Secretary, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Closer, Legally Blonde (guilty pleasure..), Snatch, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, The Empire Strikes Back, Silence of the Lambs, Waking the Dead, Real Genius, V for Vendetta, Amelie, Casablanca, The Usual Suspects, Chicago, La vita e bella, Bridget Jones Diary, Ronja Røverdatter, Arlington Road, Monsters Inc., Office Space. OK, so this probably waters down the term 'favourite', but I like a lot of movies..

Favorite TV Shows:

Friends, Futurama, Monty Pythons Flying Circus, Inspector Morse, Cold Feet, Desperate Housewives, Gilmore Girls, Fawlty Towers, House M.D.

Favorite Books:

Too many to mention. I'm a literature graduate, after all... Love the plays of Sarah Kane, that I just finished my thesis on. Favourite author other than that is Douglas Adams. I like to read both plays and novels and short stories. Not too keen on poetry (though I do enjoy the occasional Shakespeare sonnet). I like to read anything from classics to popular modern fiction, to fantasy (in my case that's so far limited to Tolkien and J.K. Rowling...). Well, I could go on, but I can't be bothered. ;)

Right, enough about me at the moment. I'll send you a private message in a minute about where you could apply. As I worked there, I can also tell you one and another about the company. So how is your Dutch going (for if you would like to communicate with a 'local' ;) )? As a Norwegian, what's your opinion about the European Union? And about whale hunting? Have you ever been to Nordkapp, as you didn't live very far away from it in Tromsø? And what do you prefer, light or dark nights during summer?

Vennlig hilsen,

David

Neah, it's not your imagination that we got a lot of bureaucracy over here. As in matter of fact, that's one of the reasons that a lot of Dutch people emigrate. Especially if you want to start your own company, you've got to go through such a shhhload amount of paperwork that it's just not worth while. Besides the fact that we nearly got to pay taxes on even our farts, because we pollude the air too much with them...

Anyway, to translate a Dutch saying literally to English; The grass is always greener across the road. Pretty big chance that your boyfriend knows what I'm talking about, if the sentence isn't selfexplanatory enough already. :) You probably came to The Netherlands as well with certain expectations that you couldn't fulfill (as good as you wanted) back in Norway, other than your boyfriend.

With that thought, I'm thinking of moving abroad as well. Scandinavia actually is pretty high on the list, but from what I've heard from the Scandinavians that I've talked with in the past, it's pretty hard to get a job out there and there's not a lot of fun things to do for youngsters, and life is also pretty expensive. Maybe you can tell one and another about life in Norway (or at least the places where you have lived)?

Another option I had in mind was Ireland, which would be even easier for me as I already speak English, while my Swedish is restricted to just a dozen of words. The reason why I didn't put my mouth where the money is, is that one of the main reasons of emigrating is that you think you will be able to find ultimate happiness in another country. And I'm not sure whether I will find that happiness abroad.

(end of part one)

Hey, if you are looking for a job in Amsterdam and you don't mind working in customer support, I know a place where they sometimes need native Norwegian and Swedish speakers. So if you are interested, give me a message and I can tell you more about the place. :)

Anyway, saw on your weblog that you have also been to Rotterdam. If you live in Amsterdam, it's not such a good idea to start about Rotterdam in a really positive way. Amsterdam and Rotterdam are in this rivalry, ofcourse caused by football. But if there's something you still would like to know about Amsterdam, you can ask me if your man by any chance doesn't know it.

So where in Norway are you from? Oslo? Trondheim? Bergen? Stavanger? Kristiansand? And what are the major differences between Amsterdam (and the Dutch people in general) and the Norwegian folks (in the place where you originally are from)?

Regards,

David

Känner du dig hemma i Amsterdam än?? (för visst är du inflyttad till amsterdam??)
