Time to open your eyes folks!
Just a little explanatory note with regard to the graph above aimed specifically at a friend who's a bit sceptical! >;P *waves*
Carbon dioxide is a gas which occurs naturally within Earth's atmosphere. It is a by-product of respiration in animals and plants. However, plants also use carbon dioxide in the process of making food from the sun's energy i.e. Photosynthesis.
Carbon dioxide is also present in the Earth's atmosphere where it acts as an insulating layer so that all of the sun's warmth is not reflected back out into space. For this reason it is called a 'greenhouse gas'
Problems arise when the levels of carbon dioxide (and other greenhouse gases such as methane) get so high that too much heat is being trapped. One then sees a 'runaway greenhouse effect' in that the temperature of the planet below the atmosphere continues to rise. The planet Venus is an extreme example of 'runaway greenhouse affect'.
This is what causes global warming which, in turn, is thought to bring about climate change.
Many people STILL believe that the rise in Carbon dioxide (see graph above) is NOT due to human activity. However, the weight of evidence and the fact that atmospheric levels of carbon dioxide have risen so steeply since the Industrial Revolution of the 19th century seems to preclude this.
This is a highly simplified account of 'The Greenhouse Effect' and Global warming/climate change. For further reading, comprehensive texts on this subject include:
