The Downside of Being a Manager

Today I had to fire someone for the first time. As a manager, I know it was the right thing for the company. As a person, it was hard to look into his eyes and tell him that he no longer had a job. It didn't matter that he deserved it. I just kept thinking that this guy now has to go home to his wife and explain that he no longer has a job to help pay for the house they just bought. It was the hardest thing I have had to do in a long time. I felt horrible.
I was in the same situation several years ago. I had to fire a girl who came to Moscow from a smal town and was renting a flat. And I knew she had a kid. It wasn't my will but the order of the boss. I felt horrible either because later I understood that it was my fault as a manager. I failed to teach the girl how to work. After that case I never fired people.
