I have no clue about this stuff, so you guys can just battle it out. I would like to read about it though, both from the christian and non-christian side, because I've only ever read Genesis so I wasn't aware of any "swearing" of any kind.

Please state your evidence and explanation Óñìèõâàíå :)

A lot depends on your definition of 'swearing" - I can cuss up a blue storm here in america by using English words that don't mean a thing to the people here, but in England my brothers would slap me across the back of the head! Damn to me is a very mild word, but I have been told by the christians in my office it's a cuss word as I am asking their god to damn something/someone. Hm, as it's their god and not mine, what difference does it make? F**k and s**t seem to be everyday cuss words these days, but don't see them in the bible. Surely times change, what offends people change... BTW does the bible say NOT to swear?

I believe it says not to take the lord's name in vain and I remember being told at school (I attended a catholic school ironically enough Ðàçñìèâàíå :D) that many swear words were corruptions of curses that were openly blasphemous.

e.g. Bloody - comes from the curse By Our Lady

There were others but I can't remember them all.

I don't know where the 'modern' swear words like the 'F' word fit in to that theory though.

Going back to JWC's original point about Jesus' swearing, I also remember Jesus referring to Gentiles as pigs. Calling someone a pig continues to be a serious insult in the Middle East up to the present day, especially among Muslims - who consider them unclean. But overall swearing seems to be very minor issue in the Bible in terms of what God is concerned about.

Sunfire,

The Bible wasn't written by one person. It was written by many different people at many different times and places. Some, like the Apostle Paul, are well known by historians. But others are only shadowy figures who scholars refer to as "J", "A", etc. Even the single book of Genesis had mutiple writers. That's why the story of Creation has two separate and contridicatory versions.

Just "enlightening" you on the 'F' (and 'S') word.
It was a common middle ages English word and used in every day verbal intercourse but became regarded as vulgar only after the Norman conquest.

The word bloody used as an adverb dates back to 1650s: as an intensive, meaning, "very" or "and no mistake".
The origion is associated with bloody battle, bloody butcher etc and there is no connection with the oath's blood!', referring to the blood of Jesus."

I will shut up now.

I don't believe the bible specifically says not to swear but I do know that it says something about refraining from using the language of the world, which one could infer would be cuss words and the like.

Actually, the "f" word was derived from the german ficken (to coppulate), the dutch fokken (to breed, strike, beget), the Norwegian fukka (to copulate) and the Swedish fock (penis).

You are correct.
Our English language is a crock pot of words derived from other languages.

Yes, there is "swearing" in the bible. But, its not in that way. Profanity can convey a certain meaning or change the shift of meaning in a sentence in many ways. It doesn't always have a bad meaning, its how you use it. At the moment, I can only think of 3 words that are used in the bible. Theres the term *ss, which is referred to an animal. There's hell which is referred to eternal damnation, and there's and damn which refers to a curse. It depends on the context, really. So, it's not really "swear" words, just words used in a different way.
