In terms of country music in the US, the first commercially successful records were by Jimmie Rodgers and the Carter Family in 1927. Around this time WSM radio began broadcasting "The Grand Ole Opry" from Nashville, Tennessee. The music they played was then known as "hillbilly music" and was basically the music of white people in the rural South with roots in gospel, folk songs and the blues. Nashville continued to develop as it's commercial and artistic center, with country music growing ever larger in popularity in the post World War II era. Major stars included Hank Williams, Johnny Cash and Bill Monroe (who specialized in his own form of traditional country known as "bluegrass".) Country music has continued to be commericially successful. But nowadays most country has become very mainstream and lost much of it's traditional sound. I consider it mostly just another form of popular music. But marketed towards a somewhat older, more conservative and more rural demographic than top 40 pop music from NYC and LA. Any more questions feel free to ask.
