What are your thoughts about the casting done for "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time"? I recently saw the trailer, and noticed a huge arguments for and against the casting of Jake Gyllenhaal as the Prince. Some felt outraged at the casting of white actors in Persian roles, while some argued it made sense: a film costing $200 million isn't going to gamble casting an unknown actor (and how many Persian actors can you list working in Hollywood anyway?), and it's a fantasy film, not really historical Persia.
This made me think of the same exact same arguments which arose for "Memoirs of a Geisha," where the leads actors were Chinese portraying Japanese. One thing that struck me was a comment made by Korean-American actress Sandra Oh, who defended the cast saying that you have white actors like Leonardo DiCaprio and Viggo Mortenson playing South African, Italian, Englishman, Greek, Spaniard, Russian, ect. and no one cares, so why should she be limited in her roles by only being able to play characters of her ethnicity?
So, I was wondering how people globally feel about actors portraying other ethnicities, and the Anglicization of film portrayals?
