Poe is one of my favorite authors, and we covered him extensively in a course on Southern Literature last fall here at The University of Georgia. While you may recognize his works in the Gothic genre, it may interest you to know that he is responsible for developing the Detective genre as well. His Murders in the Rue Morgue was groundbreaking in it's form and content.
Also, for all you Poe-heads, you may want to look into reading the works of a man named William Gilmore Simms. The man was Poe's main inspiration, and was like-minded in that he traveled to some very dark parts of the human mind.
