Outlander by Diana Gabaldon, and if you like there are about six more books coming after. It's not too heavy, but it's definitely not really light either. For me it's the ideal escape-literature, but at the same time it's nice to ponder over.
Anything by Jules Verne. Worked for me last year as the ideal summer reading.

I just finished The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and really enjoyed it. However, I would recommend something like Notes from the Underground, Bartleby, The Scrivener, The Kite Runner, or anything by Virginia Woolf.
Oh, and Laughter in the Dark by Nabokov <--- great novella.
Summers the best time to re-visit all your childhood classics. Chronicles of Narnia, Malroy Towes, Watership Down, Brother Grimm etc. I spent last summer re-reading all the Harry Potters as I didn't read them in order last time (and the last one still makes no sense!).

You can say again! I love re-reading my childhood books. I'm thinking of re-reading Karlsson by Astrid Lindgren:)

I've recently finished reading "The Help" by Kathryn Stockett and I really liked it a lot. It's a good and interesting book.
