Jesus told us to be salt to the world. Salt, as we know, adds flavor to food. Jesus, than, was telling us to add flavor to the world. Through his (or her) effort to do good and to be good, a person acquires goodness. That goodness, as acquired through preserving and effort, makes a person flavorful to those around him. His humbleness, honesty, love, and good faith are a delight to the people that come into contact with him. Like salt to food, he brings flavor to his community. That is what Jesus told us to do.

Ah, salt. We literally can't live without it and it's had a fascinating history. NaCl when broken apart into it's two main constituents, sodium and chloride, are quite poisonous to humans. Indeed, if you eat too much salt, you will die. Likewise, if you don't consume enough the same result will befall you.
At times in history salt has been used as currency and was even traded at par in some cases with gold. It is a very versatile mineral, and we use if for thousands of different purposes. We use it to kill slugs, we use it to tenderize meat and to preserve food. We use it to draw poisons out of our flesh and flavour our food.
If I may correct the OP, I don't think he said be the salt of the Earth, I believe it's told that he said "we ARE the salt of the Earth."
Perhaps what he meant by that was simply that we should be of some use.

hmm...as you said Salt = do good deed.
But if too many salt in food, it's not tasty food, it's not healthy.
but if there's so many good deeds you did, it'll be more tasty.
i dont think that's the true meaning.
hmmm....
