where do these kind of things come from....

for example, I love you is said in french as "je t'aime" ... which sounds pretty less romantic than English. then again, if you love someone and saying something to him/her in soft tone, anything you'd say should sound romantic.

I strongly disagree
and "Ich liebe dich" doesn't sound lovely to my hears.

I studied german for 5 years at school (but forgot almost everything) and it always sounded harsh to me.

If you want to compare french and german, I recommend the beautiful song "Göttingen" by the french singer Barbara.
it was sung in both german and french

I started to love German after travelling there. Now when I hear someone talking in German I just remember all my happy experiences there and I just want to listen more and more. I'm even thinking about learning German. But I want to learn Japanese first.

A pretty interesting discussion.
Personally, I think to fully understand the power of the German language (or maybe even of any language) we have to take a look at poetry or music.

To combine both I'd like to recommend a few tracks in German I like a lot, and even if you maybe don't like hiphop/rap (I myself like just a few sophisticated artists) you should give it a try and simply listen - for the sake of the impressive mastery of the German language.

HipHop/Rap
Geutz - Taugenichts
RuhrpottAG(RAG) - Kreuzwortfeuer
Too Strong - Die Deiche brechen
Wisdom&Slime - Das Element (Austria)

Punk
Wohlstandskinder - Das Grau unserer Zeit
Fliehende Stürme - Gestern
Baffdecks - Paul ist tot (Fehlfarben cover)
Captain PlanET - Rambo

Poetry
Hermann Hesse - Stufen (read by Hesse himself in 1949)
Gottfried Benn - Blinddarm
Rainer Maria Rilke - Nachtgedanken
Friedrich Nietzsche - Ohne Neid (read by Klaus Kinski - formidable)

I'm pretty sure that no language sounds rough or angry by nature. If anyone wants to transmit anger in his message he will use harsh words and pronounce them appropriately.
What I try to lineout is that German bears some potential due to its grammatical certainty in some cases, which I really like, and miss in English for example.
IMO to say German sounds angry or harsh is just too easy and superficial. I for one agree to one of my previous speakers here and say... it's romantic and the more the language itself and its user originates from the early 1900s (or even earlier) the more impressive appears its very special, magical, maybe somewhat antiquated sound.

So Polish language is language of bees and hornets because it sounds like a swarm of them Laughing I've been to Germany, met some Germans and they've talked with very nice, smooth accent. I like that crepitating "r" :)

German is sexier than French, Spanish or Italian in my opinion.

Hmm. I do think German has a lot of "strong" sounds, and if you ever hear someone who is angry and speaking in German, it can sound kind of scary! It's still one of my favorite languages, it's absolutely lovely, and I could listen to it all day; but I won't deny it can come across as sounding very harsh.
