If you want historical, then as well as York you should consider Lincoln. I'll warn you though - it's a loooooong hike uphill to the castle and cathedral (where some of the Da Vinci Code was filmed) from the train station - though you can get a bus up there.
I like to travel, and have been to many places in the UK. It can become an expensive habit. To help plan my traveling costs, I usually check out a website called http://humuch.com. They have a list of prices for tourism/daily living expenses that travelers can review before hopping on a plane....(Please note that this is also the company i currently work at).
I'd also recommend Lincoln, a quiet marvel of a city. Be warned Manchester is overrated (just my opinion) especially to tourists.
As for travel, book ahead of your visit for cheaper prices. Sometimes 'National Express' has deals for coach trips if you can stand the long travel times.
Everyone in my family like historical places except me, I often get very bored and just annoy the others after a while. I prefer having fun, being active and meeting people, also dacing, party etc. so if you have any recomendations that families can do together that's fun and also fun things for teens then I'd appriciate it a lot.
