I'm planning on backpacking there.

But i'm well aware that America has a problem with guns and is that something to be worried about or am i being a pussy?

There are definitely certain cities in America you want to avoid (those are big cities though and you wouldn't be backpacking there) but as for just walking into the streets and getting shot is extremely unlikely. Most Americans are friendly and welcome visitors, you're safe to backpack here.

You shouldn't be worried at all. The very poor "ghetto" cities are the most dangerous. So if you're very worried just aviod those places at night-time and use your common sense. Don't ruin your visit by being worried!

I agree with everyone; there's no need for you to worry about getting shot. Of course there are bad areas in the big cities that you want to avoid, but what city doesn't? I think the media just presents this very scary view of America. But just have fun and check out all the beautiful national parks.

C'mon, America is not a war zone, I guess it's safe. I've been there a few times.

I don't think that you can get shot by accident only in the USA.
If you follow these "be aware of dark places, stay away from certain areas during the night, avoid a few places"-rules you will be fine.

Well, if you plan on backpacking through Compton or parts of Detroit, I am sure you're safe. Most people out in my part of the country just have guns for hunting, but we're all pretty welcoming here.

as many of the people here said, it's only the certain areas. Most likely, you won't even be near those areas where people will point a gun at you so no worries!
