My late Father was a military air-force pilot. As perhaps you recall, the Portuguese Azorean Islands, namely Lajes, was a military foclal point in the 50's. Portuguese,English and American Pilots were stationed there (Defence Era). Nowadays, Drones have "Taken over",so to speak, reacting to any enemy sources...
