Ciao Alvaro! ;)

By the way, my apologies if my conversation seems too stilted. I have a good mastery of written english now, but still have problems with idiom and such. And spoken english is horrible, unfortunately :( Very sad.

Hmm - one other thing that a good art gives is extended youth and a similarly extended lifespan. Ninja, who practice a good many diverse combat and meditative arts, hardly seem to age until sixty, and retain full function for decades after that. I like kendo for the fast movements, and the self control and skill involved. Though I am not a kendo practitioner - the ninja have their own system of swordsmanship which starts with a training in knife-fighting.

Yes, of course. Although swords are not practical in the modern world (because they are banned or limited) the practice of any martial art can given you skills that you can't acquire if you don't practice it, as you say. I have practiced kendo for 5 years and unconsciously I've gained good reflexes and physical strength. In dangerous situations, maybe my body could react and act appropiately. The most important is that you love what you do and find yourself.

Another thing that the sword arts confer is an excellent understanding of combat strategy. In this, kendo is particularly effective through its use of armor and the shinai. Indeed, japanese swordsmanship training was revolutionized through the development of the shinai. The bokken could lead to serious injuries in training, but the shinai allowed warriors to gain battle experience without the risk of serious injury.

The sword arts are not for self defense in the modern world; however, they are excellent training for the reflexes, and can confer extremely effective skills if merged with a non-sword art. For example, evading a sword is far harder than a similar evasion against an unarmed attacker.
