About Me:
I'm looking for some like-minded individuals to talk to, for intelligent discussion about topics we may have in common, but of course not at the expense of humour and silliness.
I'm interested in and enjoy everything from politics, philosophy and cosmology to anime, movies, and video games. I love fantasy and to a lesser extent science fiction, especially when it has a bleak and dystopian feel.
I'm a very introverted, naturally hermit-like person. I do not see this as something that needs to be 'reformed' or as a character flaw, it's just my natural state. That doesn't mean I don't like to go out and things or there isn’t stuff I’d like to do given the chance; it's just there's nothing to do and not many to do it with.
I'm not into the drunken pub-crawl culture so that pretty much writes off 90% of the people in my everyday life to form any lasting connection. I’m not straight-edge or think alcohol is inherently evil or anything; I just don’t see why life has to revolve around it and don’t see the appeal of altering my perception of reality.
I listen to music from all genres, but most of what I listen too tends to lean towards either rock/metal or 'classical' orchestral/instrumental. Sometimes I find over-sentimental pop music entertaining due to it being unintentionally funny.
I love to draw and paint. Others praise my work, but I have impossibly high standards for myself, so though I enjoy the process; I tend not to be pleased with much of what I do. I'm attempting to write a novel which would be a series if I ever managed to silence the inner critic and stop changing things. I also play piano, albeit badly, sight reading isn't my thing but I'm good at picking things up by ear.
I'm politically liberal. I don't follow one specific ideology or party but my views generally come under that definition. I can accept some slight variances but I don't get along with social conservatives, those far to the right, the blindly patriotic and those with blind faith. I'm pro-abortion, pro GBLT rights and believe strongly in separation of church and state.
I think attitudes towards sex nowadays are ridiculous but people treat the act itself as the problem rather than the fact that people seem to turn it into something subversive or as something forbidden that can't be discussed. I think the state consent laws (and I am talking about teenagers, not pre-pubescents being preyed upon by paedophile rapists) are largely ridiculous, the fact that you can get married before you can vote, the fact that you can be charged as an adult but not trusted with alcohol etc.
I have standards but I don't expect from other people what I can't do myself and by no means think I’m perfect. I value intelligence and genuine free thinkers who don't just think they're ‘intellectual’ because they can regurgitate the contents of a textbook and are unable to form an opinion that isn't pre-prepared or a version of someone else’s.
I want to leave (escape :p) Ireland as soon as possible, but can’t afford college anywhere else but here, so I can’t quite yet.
I really love animals, I care about their welfare but I despise and want nothing to do with extremist groups like PETA giving the cause a bad name and the impression that all welfare/rights activists are part of some crazy fringe group. I'm 100% against cosmetic testing and undecided on (current) medical testing.
Anyone interested in the dating side of things; I'm not looking for random hookups and I don't enter into relationships lightly. Especially online; I must really get to know someone first. I don't believe in marriage, though I'm looking for long-term monogamy, and do not want children. Don’t take my age as meaning that statement as irrelevant, I’ve heard all the preaching before.
If I get to know someone reasonably well I've no trouble sending a picture, I just don't want to publicly. Understand that it is due to privacy, not insecurity about my appearance.
I like people who will think against social norms while not throwing stones for the sake of it. Those who do not just accept 'it's just what people do' or 'it's just the way things are/culture/tradition as excuses.
People who can be 'odd' and 'weird' and genuinely unique but without actively trying to be 'different'.
People who like to learn, (even if they hate institutionalised education/academia (I certainly do.) who will think objectively beyond knee-jerk emotional responses and have at least a good idea of current affairs, even if they're not especially political.

Requests:
Firstly, please actually read my profile. Yes, I'm aware it's pretty long as profiles go on this site.
No txt spk (how r u), a message filled with 'lol's or people not capitalising in the right places or even using basic comma and sentence structure.
Age, sexuality, gender, race or anything else like that doesn't matter.
Someone who can take the fact that I'm honest and forthright with my opinions (though not abrasive or pushy) and isn't easily offended.
Please try and say more than 'hi. how r u. im [insert name] plz b my friend'. If you only have a passing comment to make just post it on the wall, and if you want to converse with me I think I've given enough info here for people to find something to talk about so please use the message system, I prefer to have private conversations. I enjoy reading long emails :)
And something from my history on other 'social networking' sites:
Insulting me and making ad hominem arguments against things I say here aren't good ways to make me talk to you. Understand that knowing what I want doesn't make me an asshole and I don't go around attacking other people's chosen lifestyles and preferences even if I find them personally unappealing as long as they don't hurt others.
If you're interested in having an informed debate I'd be interested in speaking with you, but please don't just state 'your views are X, Y and Z' without telling my why you think that.
I’m not ageist, and dislike it when I see people with narrow age ranges set in their profiles, especially when they claim they only seek friendship. Practical experience and emotional maturity/self-awareness are different things, many people seem to lack the latter two no matter how old they get. Also, not everyone who's older than you is automatically 'creepy' or to be immediately labelled as some kind of pervert or written off as invalid (I see people reacting like someone 5 years older than them is some kind of paedophile, even when they're in their 20s themselves.) I don't see why this should be any more acceptable than any other blatant prejudice or generalisation.
Sort of goes without saying, but anyone who's in any way sexist, racist or homophobic I am not interested in talking (or having pointless arguments) with you.
In general I enjoy reading long rambly messages and won't mind if it's a random stream of consciousness, as long as you actually have something to say to me based on reading my profile, instead of just a short, generic statement.
No friend requests until we've spoken, please. I'm not here to 'collect' 100s of 'friends' and will click decline. I also have MSN and AIM, but again I only want to give this to people I've gotten to know somewhat first.
* * * * * * * * * * * *
I wish I didn't have to put rants like this up. I'm tired of having to put warnings and rules on every online profile I ever have, but I'm sick of dealing with immature, petty people and guys with entitlement issues.
Do not act like you deserve a response no matter what you say to me, and don't throw a tantrum if I don't reply to you immediately.
I don't respond the exact second I open a message. I admit I'm not the most prompt at replying and sometimes even take a week or two. I may have been getting to it, acting like an impatient 3 year old is just going to show you up as not worth talking to in the first place. It's interesting how someone can like me one minute, then I don't reply to them immediately (and I mean 2-4 hours after they sent it) and they turn nasty and start criticizing the stuff they previously liked.
I'm tired of 'nice guys' who only use compliments and suck-ups to get on side, but if you don't respond to them they take this abrupt turn around, start hurling abuse and just highlight how unstable and insecure they really are. If I didn't want to talk to you before I certainly don't after you behave like a particularly vindictive and spoiled baby.

Language Exchange Requests:
I have okay-ish conversational German, the odd word in Japanese and I'd love to improve those two as well as being open to any other language you'd be willing to teach, and of course I'm open to helping with English too. I'd really like to learn Latin but I haven't done much about it yet and it seems like it would be difficult to start from scratch alone.

Drawing, painting, writing, politics, current affairs, reading, ranting/rambling, cognitive science, cosmology, genetics, philosophy, psychology, animals, music, playing piano, cooking, procrastinating by writing over-long profiles on the internet ;p, video games (Final Fantasy, Metal Gear Solid, stuff like that...), anime, manga, ancient history, good food

Favorite Quotes:
"A casual stroll through the lunatic asylum shows that faith does not prove anything." - Friedrich Nietzsche
"The trouble with the world is that the stupid are cocksure and the intelligent are full of doubt." - Bertrand Russell
'Great spirits have always found violent opposition from mediocrities. The latter cannot understand it when a man does not thoughtlessly submit to hereditary prejudices, but honestly and courageously uses his intelligence and fulfils the duty to express the results of his thought in clear form.'- Albert Einstein
"The unexamined life is not worth living"- Socrates
"The unexamined life may not be worth living, but the life too closely examined may not be lived at all" -Mark Twain
"Do not believe in anything simply because you have heard it. Do not believe in anything simply because it is spoken and rumoured by many. Do not believe in anything simply because it is found written in your religious books. Do not believe in anything merely on the authority of your teachers and elders. Do not believe in traditions because they have been handed down for many generations. But after observation and analysis, when you find that anything agrees with reason and is conducive to the good and benefit of one and all, then accept it and live up to it." - The Buddha
