I think you mean the "passé composé", like in your sentence "je suis allée", that's passé composé, and that's for "short" actions in the past or somehow related to the present (both "i went" or "i have been"). The "imparfait" is for "long" actions, such as "i was going".

Sorry for interrupting the conversation, but I guess that, as we are both students, we might have the same problems, and native speakers don't understand what we mean :P .

right...there's no "temps parfait" in french, only the "imparfait".After it depends what you wanna speak about.If there are consequences in the present, you must use the present perfect.if it's finished, you must use the preterit?
