Hi Ling,
Nice to meet you, I'm from Singapore
Like you, I love to trek and explore the road less travelled and see the world. Unfortunately, we do not have mountains here in Singapore. haha. I enjoy photography, currently in lomography :)
Hope to befriend you and get to know some friends from Taiwan

Ha! Wonderful! The land I was born in is flat. I moved to AK 2 years ago. My first time living in the mountains. I don't think I can live without them again!!
Wow. Taiwan has a lot of big mountains! The area where I live in AK has mountains from 1000-5000 feet. That makes them easier to climb. The tallest I've climbed so far has only been 2,300 feet I think. The tree line here is only around 1800-2500 feet! Amazing, yes. I bet it is much higher there. Does it get cold in the mountains in the winter? Are there any snow sports then?

Alaska does get very very cold inland. There are a lot of people that still live away from the ocean, but you are right. I large portion live near the ocean because it is more mild. There are a lot of natural resources from the ocean as well.
I have only seen small bits of the aurora. I am sheltered form the mountains. The aurora usually are brightest early early in the morning, and its dark for nearly 18 hours here in the middle of winter. To get a good view I would have to do a bit of night time snowshoeing/skiing! I've gotten some new gear for this winter, so I should be able to get out for some winter camping and such. That should make Aurora viewing easier.
No Polar bears here, thank goodness!! Ha! They are a good 600-900 miles to the North. We do have orcas (killer whales), baleen whales, sea lions, Harper seals, otters, and bears! Lots of good wildlife viewing. This past spring i was fortunate enough to sea killer whales while kayaking 4 different times!! I was a bit nervous. The whales were a good 1/4 mile off, so I was plenty safe.

Are the mountains in the background of you profile pictures in Taiwan? They look wonderful. How are the winters there? Is there a lot of snow? How cold does it get? I live near the ocean in Alaska. The ocean keeps us warm in the winter (-10 to 5 deg C). We get soooo very much snow. I love it!!
