2.2 General information about Iteso
2.2.1 Geographical Location
The Iteso live in the Eastern part of Uganda in the Districts of Soroti, Katakwi, Amuria, Serere, Bukedea, Kabermaido, Ngora and Kumi. Some are in Palisa and Tororo districts. The political insecurity of the early 1990’s caused many Iteso to move as far as Iganga district.[52]
Teso is as one of the fertile regions in the North-East of Uganda, is boarded in the North and East by the semi-arid region of Karamoja, to the West by the Lango and to the South by Bukedi. About 80% of the population in Teso are Ateso speakers, in Teso, there are smaller tribal groups living alongside other original Iteso called Kumam who speak Kumam language related to the Luo, large population of the Iteso also live in parts of Bukedi especially in Palisa and around Tororo and some of the Iteso spread upto western Kenya to Teso district in Kenya.[53]
In 1992 Teso became split into two districts those are; Soroti and Kumi and currently the two districts have produced six more districts which are ; Amuria, Katakwi, Kabermaido, Bukedea, Serere and Ngora.
The Iteso belong to a family of peoples who were called “Ateker” meaning people of one language. In the past they have been called Nilo-Hamites which meant nothing to the people themselves. The Ateker are composed of the following major peoples; the Iteso, Karimojong, Jie of Dodoth in Uganda, the Turkana and Iteso of Kenya, the Toposa. The Ateker speak mutually intelligible dialects of the same language.[54]
The Iteso do derive their name from their ancestors who remained in Karamoja, this population was mainly of the elderly who in the form cursed their sons, who by then were still strong since they were in their youth stage, they elders had this to say to their sons “for us we are tired we shall remain but for you with your strength you shall remain there, you will become graves (atesia) for them the elders since they got tired the youth called them Ekaraki-Imojonga thus Karamojong and the youth atesia thus Iteso as present.[55]
Frankly, North-Eastern Uganda is occupied mainly by the two tribes. The Karimojong and the Iteso. They share a related language and historical roots, but have reacted very differently to western influence.[56]
The Iteso people were pastoralists ascended from the Karimojong tribe who migrated further south about four centuries ago in search of better pasture for their animals. They found a fertile ground or area where they became settled farmers able to grow a variety of crops as well as graze their livestock. Their wealth lies in their cattle, since the Iteso settled, the Karimojong have been raiding the cattle of Iteso, trying to retrieve their lost animals from generations before.[57]
Iteso are the natives of Teso found in the Eastern part of Uganda. Formally the Iteso had made district called Teso District and its headquarters was in Soroti. The district commissioner was the head of the district administration a
