Hello Terry and thank you for the interesting and great information regarding learning Chinese! This was very kind of you to give to me. I will look at the websites which you recommend. The language class I attend is also with my 7-year old daughter so I am learning at a basic level. My daughter can read 85 characters but I know only 50. It is not a lot but it is somewhere to start... Our teacher is Chinese and she does explain how many (most) of the characters are from a pictogram. (she showed us sui for "snow" looks like a hand catching the snow) I like to learn the children's songs (ba luo bo, mo li hua, etc.) because then I don't have to worry about using the correct tone! Best wishes to you. Also, I want to say that your English skills are excellent, do not worry about this. Sincerely, Cathryn
Hi, thank you, Terry, for your advice. That's very nice of you. Sorry for replying late.
Hello Terry,
Thank you for writing to me in English again after posting your message in Chinese. It would have taken me FOREVER to translate what you have written as I would not know where to start looking for the characters in a Chinese dictionary. I took Chinese lessons several years ago and learned about 200 characters with the help of pinyin also. Unfortunately, since I did not practise, I have forgotten many of these characters.
Thanks for explaining about the six categories for beginners. I was not taught this way before. It would definitely give me structure and guidance to help retain learnings instead of just pure memorizing alone. Are the Chinese characters you were using simplified format or you are also using traditional format?
I appreciate your support in helping me learn Chinese. I will definitely look up the websites you provided when I have some spare time. Since this year, I have been very busy. I see you are interested in learning English but from your message and explanation, you seem to be very good in English already. However, should you need help with something in English, let me know and I will try my very best to help you.
Sincerely,
Lynn
