I am British in Spain, I would like to practice Spanish.

Suppose it was my own perception of them as so fatally gloomy and without hope.
But I do recognize them as great works bearing a deep meaning.

How can these books be favorites, I wonder. I don't deny they are masterpieces in the genre but going through them I hated every word, every single situation. But after the finish they do leave a sense that something great and important went home.
