No, those are not exact opposites, and there are many ways to make them work together.
For example, imagine communist country as some sort of mega-Google company. Every "stareholder" (citizen) has the right to use free education (in company's schools and universities), right to use free health care (in company's clinics), et cetera, et cetera. Company's regulations prohibit having two shares for one shareholder, thus all of them are equal. All children born from two shareholders get a share automatically. All capital goods are owned by company, and all people that live in company's land are working on the company.
Isn't this company a communist country made by liberal means? ;-)
