Hello, my name is Ian.  I enjoy playing hockey, camping, playing video games and watching anime, k-dramas, soccer and formula 1.  In my spare time I also enjoy building scale models.  I have recently started painting and even though I'm not very good at it I do find it fun.

The main reason I am here is because I have recently become an uncle.  My brother and sister in law live in Austria while I live in Canada.  The main reason I want to learn German is out of respect for my sister in law's family so that while I am a guest in their country they are not always having to cater to my linguistic deficit and bridge the gap in communication.  The other reason for my desire to learn German is that even though I am a tourist while I visit my brother's family I do not want to be dependent on other's being able to speak English while I travel. 

My interest in learning both French and Japanese has a lot to do with my desire to travel.  One of my goals as an uncle is to be able to go on an annual trip with my nephew and show him the world.  Since my time during visits is limited with large gaps in between I want to make the most of the time when we have the chance.  I have always wanted to visit Japan and France.  I like both countries a lot for several reasons, though not exclusive to, the art, architecture, and culinary scenes and would love to be able to experience them first hand.  I also want to experience the joie de vivre in person

I am also interested in meeting people from around the world.  We live on a beautiful planet and our surroundings and cultures give us all unique insights.  It's going to sound cringe but I am interested in how we live our lives and our unique perspectives and experiences.  I also just like people.
