My last job working for the forest was fun and all (I worked for the forest service and did a whole bunch of environmental projects for them), I got paid very little, I was away from family half the week, and I didn't feel that I was making any big difference doing what I was doing

Nice! I hope you do find a job that you are happy with. I'm also having difficulty finding a job that I am passionate about.

Or do you just want to work for a different employer?

Ya, it's all good. That's cool that your an encoder. I have a couple of friends very gifted at that (they're also way more technologically savvy than me in general) who are thinking about that as a possible career.
