Salaam Laura, I enjoyed reading all about you here. You seem like a nice woman and I'll be glad to have you as a Penpal or Penfriend whatever, and also learn more of your language and country. Thanks

Greetings, Laura.

Si vales, bene est. Ego valeo. Perhaps you will recognize that traditional salutation in Latin from those days when you were helping your daughters translate Roman authors. In case you don't, it means: 'if you are well, that's good. I am well.' The letters of Cicero to family members always start out with such a greeting.

If Seneca is your favorite Roman author then perhaps you are somewhat of a Stoic. In this day and age that seems like a pretty good choice to me. If fact there are a lot of similarities between that philosopher's age and our own, don't you think?

I wasn't able to respond quickly to your message...for which I thank you, because I am preparing for my mid-term examinations. If I remember correctly, in the Italian university system, students are not usually confronted with exams at the mid-term. Is that right? Here, however, that is standard practice and engenders the usual pre-exam stress. But I don't worry much.

Has the olive picking season ended? What do you do with the olives once you have picked them? I'd love to hear about that even thought it might seem a bit obvious to you. Here my garden is more or less on its last legs. There are still a few herbs, like chives and parsely and jalapenos that are producing but not much more. The flower garden is dominated by the later bloomers: chrysanthemums and dahlia. Last week we had a minor hurricane. Yes. New York gets the tail end of many hurricanes. A section of my back yard is filled with debris washed up by the storm.
Perhaps this note has gone on a bit too long. So, I'll say good-bye and wait for your reply.

Good night, Sheridan

Greetings, Laura.

You have a fascinating profile! I have a feeling that you are a very interesting person. At the moment I, too, am pursuing a second degree. I'm working towards a Master's degree in History at Harvard University. Years ago I studied Latin and Greek in Rome and thereafter German at the Universitaet Wien. Photography is an art that I admire but have never mastered. I'm terrible at it. When traveling, which a do as much as I can, I sketch and draw to create lasting memories. Please write if you are so inclined. Sheridan
